If you enjoy books about the gods and goddesses, you may find this book to be a fun read. Meet Sylvia, a university student who has an obsession with Morpheus, the Greek God of Dreams. Meet Nyx, the goddess of Night. It’s definitely geared to a young adult audience, as the voice of the main character is very adolescent in nature. The author is songlike in her use of language – even in scenes that are tense. There’s a lot of description, and she does a good job of making you feel as though you are there in the scene.

Title: Into the Arms of Morpheus

Author: Jessica Nicholls

Publication Date: July 24, 2014

Genre: Dark Fantasy

Synopsis

Sylvia has always harboured a solitary obsession with Morpheus, the Greek God of Dreams. She’s brought it with her from her adolescence in a village of Northern England where she grew up, to the university in Manchester where she now studies.

Nyx is the Goddess of Night, and has spent the centuries stewing in an ancient, unrequited love. Not easily pleased, her attention is drawn to a voice chanting its devotion and desire for her, and she seeks the source of it.

She is not the only god playing in the realms of men, however. When the God of Death, and Morpheus himself become aware of Sylvia and this new devotee, the stage is set for the gods to secure their worship, or for a mortal to become one of them.

My thoughts go back to the man, I can feel his eyes on me but I can’t see him anywhere. He didn’t look that much older than me, mid to maybe late twenties. He had dirty blonde hair. I couldn’t completely tell what colour his eyes were. But I know they were studying me. His clothes were clean, and he had a brand name rucksack slung over his shoulder. He obviously wasn’t some random tramp. He wanted me to see him, to see him looking at me.

He must have been a local guy, his skin was the required shade of pale. He looked healthy, even beneath his dirty stubble. He must have done some form of sport. I can’t quite get over the sense of strain about him, strange as that seems. Beneath his eyes were shadows, he must have been tired.

Of course, he was handsome. But I’m not a fool. I wouldn’t go marching out to fall into the arms of any reasonable looking man who gave me the slightest bit of attention. I’d never fall for anyone who was lukewarm about me. I turn behind me, double checking.

But that’s just it. He didn’t look lukewarm about anything. He looked really passionate. I saw his chest moving up and down. I liked the length of his arms, and his eyes settled on my mouth for a second. I can’t get caught up in all that. I didn’t let on to him. I’m not stuck up but I’m not stupid either. It’s a mistake to relieve loneliness with a stranger. Besides, I kind of enjoy my solitude.

I tilt my head towards my shoulder and my scarf parts to reveal the skin on my neck to the chilled evening air. It’s so nice that I smile. My moment is interrupted when I remember his eyes. My heart sinks inside my chest. I really need to get back home.

I look around me again. It is still only early evening, plenty of people are about. But my heart lifts again as the bus comes and I am able to board it and make my way home. It’s only a short walk to the house I share with George and Nora.

I walk in and find the pair sitting on the faded crushed velvet effect sofa in our front room. We joke that it must be from the seventies. The house is Victorian, but it’s an assortment of decades as far as the furnishings.

George looks extra pale. He’s snappy with Nora as she places another book on the IKEA coffee table.
